About Cherryvale United Methodist Church

Cherryvale was born out of a rich history of reaching people within the larger Staunton, VA area.

Our first worship service was held on December 2, 1956, in the basement of the Parsonage, with 25 in attendance. Since then, we have grown into an intentional missional community that is about Loving God, Growing Together, and Serving the World.

Much has changed about the neighborhood that Cherryvale serves, but one thing remains the same and that is our commitment to reaching new people and inviting them to call Cherryvale home.

You are invited to worship with us and see why so many families call Cherryvale Church their church!

What’s the greatest bit of advice a mentor has given you?
I cannot think of one thing, but my mind begins to think of serval things:
Always ask what is the end goal. – Jeff Taguchi
Real discipleship is usually one-on-one. The kingdom is about multiplication not addition. -Jeff Taguchi
When someone asks you if you are free… ask them “why do you ask?” before you answer. – Tom Mattick (otherwise you might be helping someone move this weekend)
Good pastors are wiling to take the heat. -Unknown
Good leaders are often great cheerleaders. – Neil Houff
Always set a goal and have something you are working on. -Neil Houff
“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. – Jesus
The Sermon on the Mount matters. – Mark Theissen Nation
Remember to check to see if the power is off before you change the outlet. -Herman Payne
What technology innovation made the most impact on your life?
That would be easy it would have to be the iPhone. No device has affected my preaching, engagement of others, and life as much. Preach and order pizza from the same device… maybe at the same time.
What is one important skill every person should have?
I would say the ability to engage other people in conversation. You can learn a lot from a textbook you can learn even more from the people around you and their stories.
What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?
Catch-up with friends, play a board game, or play some racquetball.
What is your favorite thing about your position at Cherryvale?
Getting to be involved in peoples lives as they become more and more faithful disciples of Jesus. I love to see people grow and learn a new way of looking at scripture and how it calls them live out their convictions in the world.
I also love stirring the pot, with the words of a rebellious and passionate Jesus. There is nothing like dusting off the scripture and having Jesus convict us and challenge us to be different.
Sacraments… most definitely sacraments.
